found--and that it is composed
Von zxc123, 04:11

Although dark matter is thought to make up an impressive five-sixths of all the matter in the Universe, the scientific consensus at present is that it is composed of some still unidentified exotic particles--that interact only very weakly with all the known forces of Nature, with the exception of gravity. Dark matter is not atomic matter, which composes the matter that we are familiar with--the stuff of stars, gas, planets, moons, and people. The identity of dark matter has remained elusive, but in December 2013 a theoretical physicist suggested that the mysterious stuff might have already been found--and that it is composed of hypothetical particles called axions.

If axions really do exist, and possess a low mass within a specific range, they can well be the mysterious particles that compose the dark matter. Scientific theory has it that axions were churned out in great abundance during the inflationary Big Bang birth of our Universe almost 14 billion years ago, and that they have no electric charge, a small mass, and only a minimal interaction with the strong and weak nuclear forces. The strong nuclear force holds the nuclei of atoms together, and the weak nuclear force is responsible for radioactive decay and neutrino interactions--and they are two of the four known forces of Nature. Electromagnetism is the third--and gravity is the fourth.

If axions do indeed exist, and possess a low mass, the Universe should be literally filled with very cold primordial axions. Therefore, depending on their mass, axions could well be the mysterious, exotic, non-atomic particles that compose the dark matter. Studies are currently underway to detect potential dark matter axions, but scientists think that these studies are not yet sufficiently sensitive to probe into the mass regions where axions (if they exist) should lurk.

"Good Things Come In Small Packages"

Most scientific cosmologists think that our Universe burst into existence from an exquisitely small, extremely dense Patch that was smaller than a proton. In the smallest fraction of a second that weird and wonderful little Patch began to blow up like a wildly inflating balloon, to eventually grow and evolve into the extraordinary, and extraordinarily beautiful, Universe that we observe today. Our Universe is primarily made up of invisible stuff, the nature of which remains elusive. The star-stuff that we barely understand makes up only a very small fraction of the mass-energy component of the Cosmos. The stars manufactured the atomic elements that compose our bodies deep in their nuclear-fusing, searing-hot cores, and then blasted themselves to smithereens when they had finally burned their necessary supply of nuclear fuel--hurling the stuff of life throughout the entire Cosmos! The stars are lovely, glittering, beautiful dancing orbs in the sky. In fact, we owe our very lives to the stars, but they are merely lovely, glittering sequins floating on a Cosmic sea of darkness. If we could only observe the Universe as it truly is, we would see that by far the lion's share of matter in it is the dark stuff. The majestic, huge and luminous starlit galaxies and clusters of galaxies are embedded in halos of this weird, invisible dark matter. The dark matter forms immense, massive intertwining filaments throughout the Cosmos, and the non-atomic particles thought to compose it do not interact with light. The gigantic Cosmic Web composed of the dark matter--if we could observe it directly--would look very much like an enormous spider's web. The comparatively small quantity of luminous matter--glowing gas and the fiery starlight igniting the galaxies--would look like glittering dewdrops on this magnificent Web.
